Did someone say Safety Field Trip?

This month, GLASC traded the meeting room for the manufacturing floor with a visit to Rea Magnet Wire, a company that has been a cornerstone of the Greater Lafayette community for decades. It was a great opportunity to see firsthand how safety, innovation, and manufacturing excellence work together every day.

A special thank you to Spencer Way with HexArmor for sharing valuable insights on head protection and the critical role hard hats play in workplace safety. While a hard hat may seem like a simple piece of PPE, it serves as the first line of defense against falling objects, impact hazards, and other job site risks.

As workplaces, technology, and job demands continue to evolve, staying informed about the latest safety standards and protective equipment is more important than ever. Ensuring employees have the right protection not only helps prevent injuries but also creates a stronger culture of safety throughout an organization.

Thank you to Rea Magnet Wire for hosting us and providing a behind-the-scenes look at a company that continues to contribute to the success and growth of our community.

Ryan Griffin with Martin Supply joined us this April to share valuable insight on recognizing and preventing heat stress in the workplace. While heat stress prevention isn’t always the most talked-about safety topic, it should be—especially considering that heat stress-related illnesses cost employers an average of $53,589 per incident.

Because the symptoms can often mimic other conditions, understanding how to properly identify heat stress is critical to protecting employees and responding effectively.

A big thank you to All-Sport for providing a fantastic lunch for everyone in attendance.

We had a great turnout and were especially excited to welcome students from the Greater Lafayette Career Academy Fire & Rescue program. It’s always encouraging to see the next generation actively engaging in safety education and workforce readiness.

On Wednesday, March 18, the Greater Lafayette Area Safety Council welcomed Nikki Samuelson, MOT, ORT, CHT from the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center, an OrthoIndy practice,as our featured speaker.

Nikki shared valuable insights with members and guests during her presentation, “Shouldering the Load: A Hand Therapy Perspective on Workplace Injury Prevention.” She walked attendees through practical ways to reduce strain and prevent common workplace injuries, focusing on how factors like weight, distance, and body mechanics can significantly impact the stress placed on our shoulders and upper extremities.

Pictured are three of our members participating in a hands-on demonstration, getting a firsthand feel for how weight and distance from the body can dramatically change the load placed on the shoulders.

A big thank you to Nikki for helping our members better understand how small adjustments can make a big difference in workplace safety.

We kicked off our first meeting of the year with speaker and lunch sponsor ATI Physical Therapy. Ginger Dayton Ginger Dayton’s “Not Another Meeting! Adding Value Through Safety Teams & Inspections” training equipped organizations with practical strategies to strengthen their safety culture through empowered safety teams and effective inspection processes.

Participants learned how to define meaningful team goals, build strong cross‑functional membership, and create accountability through clear expectations and management support.

The session also demonstrated how well‑designed inspections, supported by focused checklists, training, and follow‑up, can uncover real issues, drive practical improvements, and increase employee engagement.

With a blend of hands‑on activities and actionable tools, Ginger showed how safety teams and inspections can become true value‑adding components of any workplace safety program.

The Greater Lafayette Area Safety Council was proud to host our February meeting on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Greater Lafayette Area Career Academy.

We were especially excited to officially welcome Sandi Herring as our newest board member! Sandi serves as the EHS Professional at Rea Magnet Wire and is no stranger to GLASC leadership, having previously served on the board. We’re thrilled to have her expertise and passion back at the table.

Our featured topic, ABCDs of Fall Protection, was both educational and deeply impactful. We had the privilege of hearing from Sampson Briggs of 3M, whose personal story truly resonated. His message was powerful, practical, and unforgettable.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to prioritize safety in our community. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on March 18!

Congratulations to Safety Group Leader at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. John Sanders and EHS Lead at GE Aviation Brandy Marsh for receiving an Everyday Safety Hero Award at the annual Governor’s Workplace Safety Awards Luncheon in Indianapolis last week. The Everyday Safety Hero award recognizes individuals who have championed workplace safety and health excellence in their respective workplaces. It was developed to acknowledge and recognize the contributions, participation, and impact that a front-line employee plays in workplace safety and health excellence.

Sanders was recognized for contributions made in his volunteer position as president of the Greater Lafayette Area Safety Council (GLASC) since 2012. GLASC provides access to local monthly networking and educational speakers.

During his tenure, GLASC has grown its membership to over 60 companies with approximately 40 attendees at monthly meetings. Additionally, in 2022, he led an effort to donate PPE to the Greater Lafayette Career Academy, stock hats for children in the Bauer Community Center after-school program, and monetary donations to several other local nonprofits.

Marsh was recognized for her vested time in developing the EHS program and building up the knowledge and confidence of those around her including technicians as well as other staff including the EHS specialist on-site. She has been able to build a team that is able to help push EHS forward in leading the site to a safer work environment.

Marsh led a team last year to the Ergo Cup, won a trophy and a few technicians that went with her learned quite a bit at the conference coming back ready to help improve the site. She has started the ergo committee as well as helped jump-start the on-site wellness program. She has also taken on the challenge of taking the site to the next level by working towards VPP certification for the site.

Hello GLASC members!

The GLASC Executive Board I would like to wish you all Happy Holidays. May you all enjoy the extra time off from work and the time with friends and family!

Since our banquet, we decided to “Adopt-a-Family” through United Christmas Service. A Huge thank you goes to Stephanie Lancaster, our GLASC Treasurer who coordinated with the service, bought (and wrapped) all the gifts and food, and delivered them to the family!!

According to Stephanie, the family that GLASC was paired with was a single mom of a daughter in kindergarten and a son in second grade. The mom was not able to buy anything, including food, this year for Christmas. Her kids were as excited about the food and clothes as they were with the toys. When Stephanie delivered the food and gifts, she said, “ The mom and kids started crying they were so happy. They could not stop giving me hugs and thanking [me]. This was amazing to them and an answer to their prayers.”

Again, THANK YOU to each and every one of you for the work that you do in keeping people safe at work and for investing in your time by supporting GLASC. We have been very fortunate to be able to support worthy causes throughout the year, including this family, through your membership!

Happy Holidays,

GLASC Executive Board

We are still here, we promise! We have a lot going on and our board is hard at work to make things happen you asked for.

We are in the beginning stages of planning a Safety and Health Expo for September 2015. Look for more details to follow. In the meantime, please don’t forget about our food drive contest we are holding. Last month we collected 110 pounds of food for Food Finders Food Bank. We are really close to our 200 pound goal. Whichever company brings the most weight in donations receives a gift card!

We are really looking forward to our upcoming meeting. It is August 13, 2014 at Ivy Tech Corporate Learning Center. Lunch is provided by Ritz Safety and Mike Murphy from Honeywell is going to give a presentation on Fall Protection. Lunch starts at 11:30 and the meeting starts at 12pm. We hope to see you there!

This is an excellent post from our friends at the Art of Manliness. While GLASC is, mostly, about industrial and workplace safety we need to remember that safety does begin at home. This time of year is a great opportunity to reinforce your home safety systems and change out those fire alarm batteries. Read this article to enjoy and learn more…

When you browse these poster you will see the same issue we face today. Welding safety, arch flash–it’s all there. The interesting thing about this collection of posters is that they are all from the Netherlands. They also are heavily influenced by the German Expressionist movement popular at the time. They are pretty scary to look at, but I thought it was right for this spooky time of year. MB

This month, Julie Nelson spoke to us on the value of wellness and worksite wellness programs. Preventing injury and sickness is more important than reacting to the problems after they happen. The cost of doing business can be lowered dramatically if intervention and wellness are an emphasis for your business and environment. Here are some photos from our Facebook site to document the day. Julie Nelson represents ATI Worksite Solutions. Their web site is:

The June Meeting was a big hit. We are just judging by the comments after the presentation by Paradigm Consulting. There is no doubt that preventative care and lifestyle management can save companies hundred of thousands of dollars over time. Not getting sick or hurt is a lot cheaper than repairing the damage.

GLASC thanks Kristin Stapleton and her team for the fine presentation.

GLASC Members:

Finding safety videos that are both watchable and informative is tough. This is a video on fall protection that I thought was a nice combination. It is only about 11 minutes, but it might serve as a good orientation to your employees.

Elaine Doss gave me this link that is amazing on many levels. We can chuckle about what we see here, but, make no mistake, someone is going to get hurt.
