Feature Presentation:
Today’s meeting was presented by IDEM (Indiana
Department of Environmental Management) and narrated by Mr. Doyle Hunt.
Mr. Hunt went over the Indiana Spill Rule regarding
hazardous substance spills. The rule applies to the reporting &
containment of and the response to hazardous substance spills. Certain
areas of the state are recognized as having a unique geology. The waters
of the state are particularly vulnerable to damage from spills in these
areas. Mr. Dunn went over the exclusions, definitions, and the spills
associated with facilities, and with transportation. He went over
reportable spills and the responsibilities of the owner to contain the
spill and prevent it from entering the water system. Never endanger
yourself by entering hazardous environments. Stay up wind of spills and
air releases. Never taste spilled materials. Never inhale smells. Never
touch unknown material without proper PPE. The burden of providing
information & performing spill response ALWAYS falls on the spiller.
You must call IDEM at 1-888-233-7745 in state: and
1-317-233-7745 for out of state calls to report a spill.
