Feature Presentation:

Officer Dan A. Larson of the Purdue University Police Department presented a Workplace Violence Awareness & Prevention seminar.  *NOTE*   Dan will also be presenting this presentation at the 16th Annual Hoosier Safety Council Meeting.

The seminar focused on awareness and prevention of workplace violence.  He spoke about how to recognize warning signs, what your options are if you are faced with this type of situation, how quickly a situation can escalate, how important it is to report an incident if you observe someone being threatened or overhear anything strange.  He also spoke about previous incidences of workplace violence and even local incidents to make you aware that it can happen anywhere and anytime.

The Top Ten Supervision Pitfalls to Avoid that he mentioned are:

  1. Discounting or ignoring ominous threats

  2. Failing to have security personnel nearby when threat of violence appears to be genuine

  3. Allowing the supervisor who is a possible victim to conduct the interview with the alleged perpetrator

  4. Avoiding suspension of an individual pending the investigation, because you are afraid of the consequences.  (The problem will likely get worse, not better.)

  5.  Use of confrontational behavior.  Threatening to “call the police”, raising your voice, and/or intimidating body language

  6.  Disregarding crisis outlined procedures

  7. Neglecting communication with employees who need to know of possible threats or pending danger, after the threat has been determined to be real

  8.  When seeking a restraining order, failing to warn potential victims of possible violence, so they can take extra precautions

  9. Being manipulated by the perpetrator or employee into allowing extra latitude, permitting lower standards or accepting inappropriate behavior

  10.  Acting on impulse and terminating employee on the spot, without conducting an investigation or following the key steps of disciplinary action

This seminar is fun, entertaining, and very informative.  It makes you really think about your office, your meeting rooms, and your personal security.  This seminar is definitely worth attending.

Meeting concluded at 2:30pm.
