Next GLASC Meeting

There is no GLASC Meeting in April so that everyone can attend the Hoosier Safety Council State Conference on April 16th—18th.

March Meeting Minutes

SPECIAL THANKS to Paul Felkey of Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc. for hosting the March GLASC Meeting.

GLASC appreciated Michelle Byrd's presentation on Ergonomic Job Evaluation System at SIA.   Following is a brief overview of their very informative presentation.

Agenda — Ergonomics at SIA
The ultimate goal of evaluations is to keep associates healthy and safe.

How Stations are Identified

Use ANSI  Z365 Appendix A2 charts are used to quantify different factors of the workstations.  From the charts muscleman diagrams are done and used to create a visual using, red, yellow, green.

Analysis at SIA

bulletSnook & Ciriello Tables
Research conducted through Liberty Mutual Insurance
bulletRevised NIOSH Lifting Equation
Can use www.industrialhygiene.com website to calculate once you have the measurements.
bulletWorking with other analysis tools that were mentioned in the now null Standard 1910.900.
National Safety Council Website.

Benefit of Analysis

bulletPrevent Injuries & Illness
bulletKeep Associates Healthy & Safe
bulletImprove Associates Morale
bulletIdentify Workstation Issues

Current Path & Goal

The path SIA is working on is to identify the problem workstations currently at SIA and counter measure those issues.

The goal we are working towards is to be more pro-active in identifying potential hazards and to work with the design team to identify any potential concerns before they get to SIA.

Actuation Analysis

Some jobs may require just a visit.

Helpful Hint
Always keep in mind that the Associates who work these jobs are usually the ones that have the best ideas of how to countermeasure.

Current Status
SIA is definitely on the right track of where we want to be: of the Top 10 workstations
1998 - 80 muscular skeleton disorders
2001 - 2 muscular skeleton disorders

Overall Benefit of System

The system that SIA uses allows for a quantitative approach to Ergonomics - which is what everyone is looking for.  "Show me the numbers"

The next step
• Develop Ergonomic Standards to be used for packing and workstation designs.
• Benchmark with other automotive facilities to see how their programs are working and to see if they are using something that would work for SIA.
