Governor's Award

O'Bannon awards Workplace Safety Awards to six Indiana organizations

Governor Frank O'Bannon awarded the second annual Governor's Workplace Safety Awards to six Indiana organizations in a ceremony at the Hoosier Safety Council's 14th Annual Convention and Safety Seminar. These awards recognize the most innovative safety and health initiatives among Indiana's workplaces. All of the award recipients have taken a proactive stance to educate workers, develop new safety technology, and forge partnerships to maintain a safe workplace.

"A workplace that invests in safety, invests in its future," said Governor O'Bannon. "I commend your efforts to reduce accidents, prevent illnesses and injuries, and save lives. These are the steps necessary to meet the economic challenges of the 21st century."

The six organizations recognized by category are: Central Indiana Alliance of Indianapolis, Greater Lafayette Area Safety Council of Lafayette, and Manufacturer’s Roundtable of Bedford for their emphasis on safety partnerships, Johns Manville of Bremen and Rural Indiana Safer Kids of West Lafayette for their emphasis on safety education and outreach, and P.E.L. Marketing of Woodburn for its emphasis on safety innovation.

The awards are sponsored by the Indiana Department of Labor’s Bureau of Safety Education and Training in partnership with the Hoosier Safety Council.

"Not only have these organizations improved the working conditions for the people they directly touch, they have set a benchmark for others in their community to follow," said John Robison, Executive Director of the Hoosier Safety Council. "These companies represent efforts taken above the call of duty to protect their workers."

The Greater Lafayette Area Safety Council (GLASC) was honored for safety partnership. The Council provides a forum for information exchange between its representatives from public service (police and fire), industry, education (public schools and university), utilities, research, technology, construction, health, and transportation. The atmosphere allows members to look at several options to solve a single problem so that they can select what will work best for them. According to Kathy Beaver, the President of GLASC, "The Council is like an extended family… members rely on one another when a safety need arises."

These awards have been created to discover and highlight those companies that have not only employed current safety techniques but have invented the safety techniques for tomorrow. These awards salute those organizations whose belief is that safety in the workplace should be the number one priority of every employer.
